Glow-plug diagnosis should not stop after measuring the resistance of the plugs themselves.
The high-current supply circuit must also deliver sufficient voltage while the system is operating.
Follow the Complete Current Path
A typical path may be:
Battery → Fuse → Glow Relay / Module → Harness → Glow Plug → Engine Ground
Resistance anywhere in this path can reduce voltage at the heater.
Why Open-Circuit Voltage Is Not Enough
A battery can show acceptable voltage with little electrical load.
When the glow system turns on, current demand rises substantially.
A marginal:
- relay contact;
- fuse connection;
- terminal;
- cable joint;
can then create a voltage drop.
Compare Source and Load Voltage
The key measurement is the difference between voltage available at the supply source and voltage reaching the glow plug while the circuit is energized.
This tests the circuit under real electrical demand.
Why New Glow Plugs May Not Improve Starting
A new heater connected through a high-resistance supply circuit still receives insufficient electrical power.
Cold-start symptoms may then include:
- long cranking;
- white smoke;
- unstable initial combustion;
- rough cold idle.
